Take a look at starting pitchers to begin with. Johan Santana, one of the best pitchers in today’s game has an annual salary of around 23 million dollars a year. He has two Cy Young awards and has a career 3.11 ERA in 9 Major league seasons. Francisco Rodriguez has saved 208 games over the last seven seasons and blowing 36 saves over the same span. K-Rod also pitched just one more inning (68.1) then he did last year (67.1) while gaining the record for most saves in a single season. The pay of which Rodriguez is seeking is about 4 million dollars too much per season (seeking 70 million for 5 years) as well as the contract length. The reason a closer gets saves is because his team gives him that opportunity to go out there and finish off a game. There is nothing overly remarkable that can be compared to him and Brad Lidge who of which makes quite a bit less and didn’t blow one save, too high of a price tag for a player that appears in less than half of a seasons games.
