In a move that was expected to happen in the last week, Edgar Renteria was signed by the San Francisco Giants, but the surprising part was not that he was signed but for the years and the amount. Renteria hardly deserved a contract worth 18.5 million dollars over two years and it seems like the Giants were trying to outbid other teams and by doing so overpaid for this shortstop clearly past his prime. Clearly he does not do well in the American League but does that justify giving him over 9 million a season? The same thing is going to happen with Burnett, teams are willing to overpay for a player that has had standout seasons but does not prove it over and over again. Casey Blake put up much better numbers and is getting offers for about 6 million a year so why the Giants are spending all this money, especially when they brought over Zito for a record amount for a pitcher and we all know what happened there.
